ELO

1046

  • Your quarterfinal if you beat Hoskins. Bye. Fresh, 14 minutes after your first fight.
  • CheckMat veteran. 46 black-belt medals. Two-time Master Europe champion (2023, 2026).
  • World Master bronze in 2022 and 2024. He knows this exact building and this exact 5-minute format.
  • Pattern: he reaches the end of majors and often finishes 2nd/3rd. He is excellent at getting there. Closing is the question.
  • Camps light and middle. Opens regularly. Comfortable against bigger men — do not assume you can out-athlete him in a scramble.
  • 1046 ELO, top ~12%. This is the real match of your quarter.
Game plan
High threat

The real quarter. CheckMat Worlds regular. Beat the closer, not the résumé.

Vitullo is a 46-medal CheckMat black belt with two Master Europe titles and Worlds bronze in 2022 and 2024. He camps this exact division. He will be fresh (bye) and on the mat 14 minutes after your opener. 1046 ELO. He is the best athlete in your quarter on paper.

Weaknesses

He medals. He does not always finish.

World Master bronze twice. World No-Gi silver. American 2026 silver. Master NA 2026 bronze. He is in every final and often second or third.

Exploit: Make the last two minutes yours. He has lost this exact match before — the one after he has already done the work to get there.

Turnaround is yours to steal

You will have just fought. He will not. That is his advantage only if you gas. If you win Hoskins clean, you are the warm athlete and he is the cold one.

Exploit: Win Hoskins in 2–3 minutes with points. Sit, drink, stand. Start Vitullo at your pace, not his.

Tape exists

2026 Euros vs Borowski, 2025 Pan vs Whyte (who is in this bracket), 2024 World No-Gi vs Truta. You can actually study him tonight.

Exploit: Watch the three Flo matches before you sleep. Write his first move. If he pulls, you already know the pass. If he wrestles, you already know the level change.

By phase

  1. 01

    Homework tonight

Watch Whyte 2025 and Borowski 2026. Those are the gi matches that matter. Pause at 0:20, 1:00, and after the first score.

  2. 02

    Standing

Do not give a CheckMat veteran a free collar-and-sleeve lock. Break grips. First score still wins this format.

  3. 03

    If he pulls

Pass. Do not play his guard for points he has been winning since purple Worlds. Leave.

  4. 04

    If you are ahead

He will hunt the comeback he never quite gets at Worlds. Keep passing. Do not hold a stalemate half and eat a stalling call.

  5. 05

    If you are behind

You have beaten this shape of athlete all year at opens. Sweep or take the back. Do not match his experience with hesitation.

IBJJF notes
  • He knows Worlds refereeing. Hidden stalling will get called on you, not him, if you are the one holding.
  • Five minutes. One score plus an advantage is a very typical Vitullo final.
  • Whyte is in the other half — their 2025 Pan tape is free intelligence on both men.
Watch in the film
  • First grip and whether he pulls or shoots.
  • His pass: body lock, knee cut, or long-step. CheckMat veterans usually have one A-pass.
  • How he reacts when he is down two. That is the tape that tells you how to finish him.

You spend all week on Hoskins, walk into a fresh European champion, and lose a match you could have studied on Tuesday.
