  • Friday opener. Mat 19, 4:37 PM. This is the only match you are guaranteed.
  • Owner / program director at Renzo Gracie Clarksville. Black belt under Brian Marvin. Former Army combat medic.
  • Lives at middle on the regional calendar. Light here is a cut — or a return to his 2023–24 light slot. Either way, do not assume he is small.
  • Medal shape: 1 gold, 4 silver, 7 bronze. He reaches the end of regionals and usually does not finish. That is a closer's tell.
  • Opens constantly. He will not be intimidated by pace or a scramble. He will be intimidated by a cleaner IBJJF point cycle.
  • 0 Grand Slam points. 52 overall. He is a serious black belt and not a Worlds regular at your 2026 volume.
Game plan
Moderate threat

Regional closer who lives at middle. Beat him with a clean IBJJF cycle, not a brawl.

Hoskins is a Renzo Gracie Clarksville owner/coach, black belt under Brian Marvin, former Army medic. He medals constantly on the Nashville/Atlanta circuit and almost never finishes — 1 gold against 11 silver/bronze. He opens as a habit, so he is comfortable ugly. He does not have your 2026 volume at this exact Master 6 light slot. Light here is not his default camp.

Weaknesses

He does not close

The medal sheet is the tell. Silver and bronze at every recent open. He gets to the end of a regional and loses the last match.

Exploit: Score first and make him chase. In a 5-minute match the chaser has to open from bottom or force a scramble. That is where he will give you the second score.

Weight is a question

2025–26 results are almost all middle. Light at Worlds is a cut or a throwback to 2023–24. Either he is drained or he is the bigger light.

Exploit: If he looks flat at weigh-in or in the bullpen, play pace in minutes 2–4. If he looks thick, do not play a 50/50 chest-to-chest wrestle. Score and exit.

Grand Slam inexperience at your current pace

Pans tape exists. Worlds-week density does not. You have been gold at this exact division all year. He has been bronze at regionals.

Exploit: Treat the first 90 seconds like a final, not a feel-out. He will want to settle. Do not settle.

By phase

  1. 01

    Weigh-in / bullpen

One cut. Make weight. Look at his face and his neck. If he is gray, this is a pace match. If he is heavy, this is a scoring match.

  2. 02

    Standing (0:00–1:30)

Win the first grip cycle and get the first takedown or the first sweep. Do not stand and hand-fight for two minutes. A 2–0 lead changes his entire medal pattern.

  3. 03

    If you score first

Pass or threaten pass immediately. He opens — he will give you a guard you can leave. Do not sit in his closed guard and let him rest.

  4. 04

    If he scores first

You still have four minutes. Do not dive a low-percentage submission. Sweep or take the back. You are the more current closer.

  5. 05

    Last 90 seconds

If ahead: posture, pass attempts, no stalling calls. If tied: advantage from a real pass attempt beats a desperate foot lock. If behind: you have to score, not clutch.

IBJJF notes
  • Master 6 black is 5:00. There is no time to win a war of attrition.
  • Advantages decide these matches. A near-pass and a near-sweep are the currency.
  • He has a 14-minute turnaround to Vitullo if you win. You do too. Do not empty the tank on a submission that is not there.
  • Referees at Worlds will call stalling. Moving and scoring is safer than holding a bad top half.
Watch in the film
  • 2025 Pan vs Robinson — how he starts, which guard he sits, whether he wrestles or pulls.
  • 2024 Pan semis vs McCarthy — how a better athlete finished him. Copy the score cycle, not the highlight.
  • Does he pull closed guard under pressure? If yes, your pass game is the match.

You treat him like a first-round bye, stand around, and lose a 0–0 advantage to a man who has been in a hundred ugly IBJJF matches.
